About the Island

Anafi

A rock on its own in the sea is Anafi. The crystal clear waters and serenity of the island's beauty offer a calm relaxing place for visitors and inhabitants both. The only disturbances are the picturesque celebrations and local fairs.
This island has been ignored by most holiday makers for a very long time, but has become quite popular the last years. It is very small, harsh island with steep cliffs offering spectacular views of the sea and unforgettable sunsets.

Anafi is a great place for recreation and relaxation. Here, time stands still, and you can enjoy the friendly atmosphere and little taverns without the pressure of doing and seeing lots of things.
If you do want some sightseeing, there are options though, as well as little bars and cafes. Greek islands always have some kind of nightlife, and this is no exception.

According to mythology Anafi emerged from the sea, at the command of Apollon, to save the Argonauts from a storm that broke out and give them shelter. You can stay at the pictureque harbour of the island, Agios Nikolaos, or you can move on, by bus or on foot using the only road to Hora which is built in the centre of the island at an amphitheatrical site. Near Hora is the Venetian Castle and the church of Agios Athanasios. On the east side of the island is the village of Kastelli with ancient Greek and Roman Era ruins and not far away the monastrey of Our Lady "Kalamiotissa". At the crystal clear water of Katsouni, Monastiri, Megas Potamos and Flamarou you can enjoy a relaxing swim. Anafi is a place for holidays close to nature and away from the crowds.
