Sikinos
Sikinos is one of the less frequented islands in the Cyclades cluster,
practically untouched by the tourist industry, making it a refuge for
visitors who desire total relaxation during their holidays. Its popularity
is on the rise, but Sikinos still manages to offer the quaintness of a quiet
Cycladic Isle.
Sikinos has retained all of its island character, and this adds to its
attractions for those in search of peace and an authentic atmosphere.
The island has been inhabited since ancient times, as has been proved by the
finds made in the Episkopi district.
The only road on Sikinos links Alopronia, the island's harbour, with Hora or
Kastro, one of the most beautiful villages anywhere in the Cyclades. There
are fine stone mansions to admire, and a church of Our Lady 'Pantanassa'.
The Zoodohos Pigi monastery, built on the peak of a rock, is more
reminiscent of an impregnable castle from a distance.
As in all isolated Cycladic islands, the local religious feasts are
celebrated with great enthusiasm.
If you like your islands quiet and unspoilt, you'll find Sikinos fits the
bill perfectly. There's not even a bank or petrol station on the island -
but plenty of nice beaches and beautiful terraced landscapes dropping down
to the sea. Beaches to hit include Agios Georgios, Malta, Karra and Katergo.
The Kastro is a cute and compact place with some lovely old houses and a
fortified monastery above the town. The main excursion on this island is a
one-hour scenic trek southwest to Episkopi and its church and monastery.
Sikinos has good ferry connections to Piraeus and neighbouring islands.
